5 quick tips TO ACING AN INTERVIEW
STACK THE DECK!
Searching for a job is scary, Scarier still is when you actually find a place that you really want to work and you get the phone call. You know the one. Your sitting at home not expecting anything exciting to happen, the phone rings and its your dream company. ( company A ) So you answer the phone and its company A. They say “we would love to meet with you.” After a second of stunned silence you squeak out “great” after setting a date you hang up. now what? A whole string of new worries and questions pop into your head. where to start, what to do, what to wear? The team at DHG has put together this list of 5 tips interviewers look for.
RESEARCH, RESEARCH, REACH OUT
Do your research. You may know company A makes the best Finnegan Pin on the market but do you know how? Did Company A invent it? How many people work there? whats the work environment like?
When you apply make sure you know the basic information. Where the company is located, How much the position pays and what the hours are. When you score that interview though your going to want to increase your knowledge about the company. The info you find could play into your favor. Be sure to find out what type of systems they use, Look for any news on their website. Did they just get a new contract, invent a new process, open a new location or higher a new CEO? Who knows what you could learn. Wright down the information you find. When you sit in front of the interviewer and they ask “why did you apply with us?” On top of your primary reason you can add how they invented the product or process. This will show that you are interested in the product and took the time to really think about the company and position.
Reach out. If you know someone that works there ask them questions. How are the people what is the management like? You can also ask if you can mention them and your discussion in your interview if and where appropriate.
Don’t dress like a clown
Dress appropriately. Unless your Interviewing at Hottopic don’t dress like a high-school kid. That doesn’t necessarily mean you have to wear a suit. This ties in with the research. some company’s don’t like a suit some do. Some companies don’t like loose jewelry or long beards. With resources like linked in and Facebook You can get a feel for how the company likes its employees to present themselves as well as what the person your meeting prefers. Try to dress for the position your applying for. If your applying to be a CEO then you probably should wear that suit, But if the position is as a machinist try dark jeans and a decent collard shirt. It doesn’t hurt to emulate the interviewer either. If you see them on the company linked in or facebook working, take a second to note the style of dress they wear. Who knows you could show up and have the same shirt on that would make for a great icebreaker!
Make sure you qualify for the team
Like any championship team, They want the best. Make sure you have what it takes. If the job requires you to sell an Airplane know everything about it. From how much pressure is in the tires to the size of the wing. If the job requires you to machine parts on a cnc lathe. Make sure you can actually do it. Be prepared to perform to.
Not all positions are going to require experience. For the ones that do though make sure you match the requirements. Be honest if you don’t know how to do something. Honesty is key during the interview process. When we interview some one there’s nothing more upsetting then some one that presents themselves on paper as the king of the trade, then in the interview you find out they never actually performed the task they applied for.
Get some SLEEP!
The night before your interview…….. GO TO BED! Sleep is super important. Get a good nights sleep. Your Doctor suggests at least 8 hours. Take his advice. If your well rested you will look well rested and your mind will respond faster. Go to bed a little earlier than usual. Get up early eat a good meal, shower and relax Today is gonna be awesome.
RELAX and Breathe
The strongest response your body has is fight or flight and the feeling of butterflies in your stomach is just one aspect of it. Just remember that even if things don’t work out your going to be ok. Before you walk-in to your interview talk yourself up in the parking lot. It sounds funny but it works. Look in the review mirror and practice your introduction or just tell yourself out loud that You really want this and you are going to walk in and shine. You truly are your best advocate. So take a deep breath before you go in and own the interview. Rehearse a couple of answers to some standard questions like Why did you apply and How much your looking to make. Answer the interviewer the same way you answer yourself with confidence!
